SURFIN' SAFARI SUMMER ONE - DAY TWENTY August 29, 2019

Today we took off after work for Venice Beach. We hadn’t been since June when Surfin’ Safari Summer first launched. Reviewing the weeks of wave-riding, it occurred to me that the Venice Breakwater had produced one of the better days. And these safaris opened up our thinking about surf spots and we now know that, in-close, on workdays with short windows, we really have two options when, for years, we've availed ourselves of only one. Venice is actually closer than Marina del Rey and the wave is better. The difference is a matter of preference. At the Marina there are NO people and at

Venice, there is a mob. Today, the mob sounded fun and they were on the water when we arrived about 6 p.m. The waves were great, breaking in the shallows, stretched long down the beach to accommodate all the wetsuits out there. I surfed for over an hour, caught about 10 rides (yes, I count 'em), and then we headed home. That could be it for this seasonal literary/sporting diversion, or maybe there’s one more safari in us over the weekend.

Labor Day is not an ideal moment for the knowledgeable beachcomber to head out and look for parking, but this summer has taught us to get off our duffs and solve the problem upon arrival, which has worked every time… We will check back to say goodbye to you all and to Surfin' Safari Summer as well.
